BOLIVIA: Arce feeling the heat

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce and Vice President David Choquehuanca gathered in the Plaza Murillo, outside the seat of government in La Paz, on 18 October to celebrate the second anniversary of their electoral victory with supporters of the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). They did so against a stormy backdrop. Not only are internal tensions deepening, as former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) ramped up his attacks on the Arce administration, but the opposition is also preparing to proceed with major strike action in the department of Santa Cruz, its bastion in eastern Bolivia, over Arce’s decree postponing this year’s national census until 2024.
