ECUADOR: Femicide case grips nation and forces political shakeup

The murder of a woman who disappeared from a Quito police academy has prompted a wave of public anger at Ecuador’s security forces and the high levels of violence faced by women in the country. With the government clearly fearful that the case could lead to a widespread loss of trust in the police, President Guillermo Lasso announced a shakeup among the country’s key security officials on 23 September, replacing his interior minister, Patricio Carrillo, and a number of high-ranking police officials.
