ELBA ESTHER GORDILLO: Out of the shadows

Elba Esther Gordillo, the controller of Latin America's biggest union, has been a political power in Mexico since the early 1990s, when she imperiously forced the education ministry to pulp a revisionary history textbook. Back then the education ministry was headed by Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León, who became president in 1994. Now the head of the 1.4m strong Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación union, is squaring up again to an education minister that has dared to challenge her.
