DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: High-profile trial begins

Earlier this month Alexis Medina, and Magalys Medina, both siblings of former president Danilo Medina (2012-2020) of the opposition Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), were among those sent to trial on charges relating to the so-called ‘Operation Antipulpo’ (Anti-Octopus), a probe into a high-level corruption network that has implicated key figures in the previous administration. The case has been hailed by anti-corruption organisations like Participación Ciudadana, the local branch of Berlin-based NGO Transparency International (TI), as a sign of progress in the fight against impunity under the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) government led by President Luis Abinader, whose landslide victory in July 2020 owed in large part to public anger over corruption.
