HONDURAS: Congress ends speculation over new supreme court
“An important step towards strengthening the rule of law and the fight against impunity in Honduras”. This was the response by the United Nations (UN) resident coordinator in Honduras, Alice Shackelford, to the recent appointment of the 15-member supreme court (CSJ) by the 128-member legislative assembly. The process of appointing the justices has long drawn scrutiny given the importance of the court’s integrity to President Xiomara Castro’s election-winning pledge to fight corruption and clean up the justice system, which had significantly deteriorated under her disgraced predecessor, Juan Orlando Hernández (Partido Nacional, 2014-2022), who is now in the US facing weapons and drug-related charges.
