MEXICO: Backlash over Russian participation in military parade
The involvement of a Russian military delegation in celebrations commemorating the 213th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain on 15 September has sparked significant controversy. Ukraine’s ambassador to Mexico, opposition politicians, and members of the media have all spoken out against the inclusion of the Russian troops. In characteristic fashion, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has refused to back down on the issue. Indeed, this is far from the first time the head of state has drawn criticism in relation for his stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
