BRAZIL: Lula downplays gender and race as factors in STF pick

On 25 September Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said at a press conference that “there is no need to ask the question of gender or colour” when asked by journalists if he would nominate a female judge to replace the supreme court (STF) justice Rosa Weber, the current STF president, who is due to retire after turning 75 on 2 October.
