AMLO’s information wars by press conference

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), a left-wing populist, has also used what could be called disinformation techniques to keep the political opposition on the defensive. In his case the strategy is firmly anchored in the mañaneras - long weekday early morning press conferences which he uses to set the agenda and keep himself at the centre of the political debate. In theory at least the commitment to personally communicate government policy sits well with wider promises of openness and transparency. The president, with a down-to-earth style of speaking, has clearly remained well-connected with an important part of the electorate. Now approaching the final year in his six-year presidential term, AMLO continues to register 60%-plus approval ratings.
