PERU: Boluarte shifts right with migrant expulsions
Peru’s President Dina Boluarte would like everyone to forget her tenure as vice president under former left-wing president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022). Since assuming the presidency following Castillo’s impeachment last December, she has assiduously courted the right-wing parties that dominate congress and which led a relentless campaign to unseat her predecessor. In her latest effort to maintain the support of the right, Boluarte issued a decree enabling the rapid deportation of illegal migrants within 48 hours of their identification by the authorities.
