VENEZUELA: Essequibo referendum proves awkward for opposition

One of the few issues that unites the Venezuelan government and opposition is their support for the country’s disputed claim to the Essequibo region, which comprises around two-thirds of the territory of neighbouring Guyana. President Nicolás Maduro’s government has significantly raised tensions over the Essequibo dispute in recent months by announcing a referendum to assert Venezuelan sovereignty over the region, which Guyana has decried as a planned annexation.
