BRAZIL: Bolsonarismo struggles to win over centre-right allies

Over the past year, the right-wing Partido Liberal (PL) of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) has been making more noise in support of a bill that proposes pardoning the Bolsonaro supporters who were convicted for storming the seats of government in Brasília on 8 January 2023. In 2024, the centre-right former president of the lower chamber of congress, Arthur Lira (Progressistas, PP), stalled the passage of the bill, and his successor Hugo Motta (Republicanos) has also been reluctant to table this bill backed by the PL, even though the right-wing party claims that it has managed to win over right-of-centre allies to support the legislation.
