Since 2023 the federal police (PF) has been investigating a faction of the national intelligence agency (Abin) which it suspects had spied on political opponents of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) during his administration. On 17 June the PF concluded its probe into the so-called ‘Abin paralela’ and submitted a report to the supreme court (STF). The report did not suggest criminal charges against Bolsonaro himself but recommended indicting some of his closest allies, such as federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem, who served as Abin director from 2019-2022, and his second son, Rio de Janeiro city councillor Carlos Bolsonaro.
