Chile is already looking beyond the 26 October municipal elections.
The contest for the presidential nomination of the ruling Concertación alliance
has become less crowded, albeit slightly so. Former president Ricardo Lagos has
announced his withdrawal from the race - a decision that has raised eyebrows,
given the fact that he was the favourite in the opinion polls. This has narrowed
down the field to three contenders, who have been publicly, if obliquely, urged
by President Michelle Bachelet to set aside their presidential aspirations to
