URUGUAY: Astori resigns to run for president

The economy minister, Danilo Astori, stepped down last month to prepare himself for a tilt at the presidency in October 2009. Astori was replaced by Alvaro Garcí­a, who had been serving as the head of the national development corporation (CND). Garcí­a promised continuity: he said he would continue seeking foreign investment as an engine of job creation. The big question now is whether Astori can stitch up a deal with the other heavyweight in the ruling Frente Amplio coalition (FA), the septuagenarian former Tupamaro guerrilla, José Mujica, or whether the FA will plunge into an internal debate over its next leader.
