SURINAME: Venetiaan begins third term relying on new ally

Contrary to what many local observers had been predicting Desi Bouterse's Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP) and the allied Volksalliantie Voor Vooruitgang (VVV) of former president Jules Wijdenbosch did not have a hidden reservoir of strength in the United People's Assembly (the national assembly plus district and provincial councils). President Runaldo Venetiaan was elected on 3 August by a comfortable majority of 560:315.
